Flat Lapping Unit: Acquisition and Training
1. STATEMENT OF NEED AND PURPOSE:
Southwest Regional Maintenance Center (SWRMC) Code 944 requires a Lapping machine to perform daily tasks for the repair, overhaul, maintenance, and modernization of US Navy ships.

2. Background Information and Objective:
The Lapping machine is capable of lapping gate valve wedges up to twelve inches (90 lbs.). This is a requirement of the overhaul process to ensure a water tight seal when the gate valve is in the shut position. This machine will do the work that is now done by humans and therefore be more ergonomic for shop personnel. This will drastically save time and money in the overhaul process and allow us to meet reliable promise to the ship. This lapping machine can and will be used on all class of Naval Ships.
